Volcano

Straight forward. This one is about relationships.

Was driving home from work and Volcano by Damien Rice came on my Spotify shuffle. Had not heard this song for a while and those lyrics really got me thinking. I’m not sure what’s the message that Damien is trying to share with this song but I’ll share my own interpretation of it.

We all try to find that someone that we would like to share our life with. Actually build life together. Humans are built that way. We are built to be together. We aren’t meant to be on our own. We never know when, how and where we will meet that other person. Some people go from relationship to relationship thinking – oh, it’s just not meant for me. I’m just going to be forever alone. In these relationships, we tend to turn into Volcanos. We burn each other down by setting higher expectations and expecting much more than the other person can give us. I have to be honest, I find myself very guilty in this as well in the past relationships I’ve had. I can’t change it and turn back the time, I can do one thing though. I can learn from them. Learn to be more patient and understanding.

So…I believe it’s not just about – oh, we’re just no meant for each other. It’s about so much more.  It’s about patience, understanding and willingness to work for it together. Putting yourself into other persons skin and trying to see things through their eyes. Some people get it right away in their first relationship and they are able to learn through it while saving the relationship. For others, they have to do some learning to get there. Even if that means hurting other people through that process.

I’m still in that learning phase.

“Volcano” – Damien Rice

Don’t hold yourself like that
You’ll hurt your knees
I kissed your mouth and back
But that’s all I need
Don’t build your world around volcanoes melt you down

What I am to you is not real
What I am to you you do not need
What I am to you is not what you mean to me
You give me miles and miles of mountains
And I’ll ask for the sea

Don’t throw yourself like that
In front of me
I kissed your mouth your back
Is that all you need?
Don’t drag my love around volcanoes melt me down

What I am to you is not real
What I am to you you do not need
What I am to you is not what you mean to me
You give me miles and miles of mountains
And I’ll ask what I give to you
Is just what I’m going through
This is nothing new
No, no just another phase of finding what I really need
Is what makes me bleed
And like a new disease she’s still too young to treat
Like a distant tree
Volcanoes melt me down
She’s still too young
I kissed your mouth
You do not need me.
